ASUS Expands NUC Lineup With AMD-Powered Gaming System

ASUS has launched its first-ever AMD-based ROG NUC mini PC, according to reports from industry sources, representing a significant diversification of the company’s gaming-focused compact computing lineup. The move comes as somewhat unexpected given ASUS recently formalized an agreement with Intel to take over the NUC (Next Unit of Computing) business, which had traditionally been exclusively Intel-based.

Flagship AMD Processor Meets Next-Generation Graphics

The new ROG NUC 9 Mini PC features AMD’s flagship Ryzen 9 9955HX3D mobile processor, sources indicate, marking the first time a Ryzen-based system has entered the NUC product category. The CPU reportedly brings a 16-core/32-thread Zen 5-based configuration with 128 MB of L3 cache, specifically optimized for enhanced gaming performance. Analysts suggest this substantial cache memory represents a significant advantage for gaming workloads and productivity applications.

For graphics capabilities, the system pairs this powerful processor with NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 5070 laptop GPU, according to the product specifications. Currently, reports indicate this is the only GPU option available for the ROG NUC 9, unlike Intel-based NUC systems that typically offer multiple graphics options including RTX 5060, RTX 5070 series, and RTX 5080 variants.

Memory, Storage and Connectivity Specifications

The ROG NUC 9 comes equipped with 32 GB of DDR5 RAM operating at 5600 MT/s, the report states, which appears slightly slower compared to Intel systems that support 6400 MT/s DDR5 memory. However, sources confirm the memory is upgradeable up to 96 GB, providing flexibility for users with more demanding requirements.

Storage configuration includes two M.2 slots with one supporting PCIe Gen 4 and another supporting the faster PCIe Gen 5 standard. The system ships with 1 TB of storage by default, but users can expand this according to their needs. Connectivity features are comprehensive, including WiFi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, and a 2.5G Ethernet port, positioning this nettop system as a modern connectivity hub.

Compact Design and Cooling Solution

Maintaining the compact form factor characteristic of the NUC line, the ROG NUC 9 measures just 282.4mm x 187.7mm x 56.5mm, according to the technical specifications. The cooling system employs a dual-fan configuration with side ventilation to manage thermal performance in the constrained space.

Peripheral connectivity includes both traditional USB Type-A and modern USB Type-C ports on the front panel, while the rear features additional options including USB4 ports alongside HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 2.1 outputs for multiple monitor setups.

Market Positioning and Availability

The ASUS ROG NUC 9 has initially launched in China with a promotional price of 14,999 Yuan (approximately US$2,100) on JD.com, according to market reports. The regular price is reportedly set at 15,999 Yuan, equivalent to around US$2,244. This pricing positions the device in the premium segment of the mini PC market, reflecting its high-end components and gaming focus.

Industry observers note that this AMD-powered NUC represents a strategic expansion for ASUS following their NUC business acquisition from Intel. The move demonstrates ASUS’s commitment to broadening the NUC ecosystem beyond its Intel origins, potentially creating new competition in the compact gaming PC space as detailed in industry discussions.

This development comes amid broader industry shifts in compact computing, including emerging trends in AI commerce applications and new approaches to connected entertainment experiences. The integration of advanced AI capabilities in compact systems appears to be gaining momentum, as evidenced by recent developments in AI assistant technology and the ongoing evolution of computing platforms.
