Jim Kavanaugh, co-founder and CEO of World Wide Technology, has been honored with the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award at CRN’s Best of the Channel Awards, recognizing his extraordinary journey from Olympic athlete to channel visionary. Under his leadership, WWT has grown from a small IT startup to a $20 billion solution provider powerhouse that counts over 80% of the Fortune 100 as customers.

From Soccer Fields to Boardrooms: Kavanaugh’s Unique Journey
Before founding WWT in 1990, Jim Kavanaugh was a member of the U.S. Olympic soccer team and later played professionally in the 1980s. He credits his athletic background with instilling the discipline and drive necessary for business success. “Call it my DNA that I got from my parents and their approach around certain values: your grit, your determination, your fight, your work ethic — those were ingrained in me early and very much reinforced as an athlete,” Kavanaugh told CRN following the award ceremony at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre.
Industry Titans Recognize Kavanaugh’s Visionary Leadership
Technology leaders including Michael Dell of Dell Technologies and Antonio Neri of Hewlett Packard Enterprise praised Kavanaugh’s ability to anticipate market shifts and reinvent WWT repeatedly. “To stand the test of time in technology, a leader has to see what’s coming and fearlessly reinvent to stay ahead,” Michael Dell said in an email to CRN. “Jim is a true visionary who built WWT from the ground up into a technology powerhouse.” Dell described Kavanaugh as “an incredible partner over decades” and “one of the original innovators of the channel relationship.”
Strategic Pivots That Positioned WWT for Success
Kavanaugh’s foresight in transitioning WWT from hardware reselling to services and investing early in software development proved crucial to the company’s growth. “About 10-plus years ago, I was thinking about skating to where the puck was going and we made a big investment in software development and building out a small, boutique data science practice that really played out well to position us to where generative AI has played out,” Kavanaugh explained. This strategic vision mirrors the careful planning seen in other industries, such as when international sanctions required strategic repositioning across global markets.
Building a Culture That Prioritizes People
Perhaps Kavanaugh’s most significant achievement is the world-class corporate culture he built at WWT, which has earned the company a spot on Fortune’s “Best Companies To Work For” list for 14 consecutive years. About 25 years ago, Kavanaugh crafted and launched WWT’s Integrated Management and Leadership curriculum, focusing on training, developing and mentoring WWT managers on the company’s values, behaviors and business concepts. “One of our big, or maybe the biggest, strategy is really the intentional focus on building out our own custom-built Integrated Management and Leadership curriculum,” said Kavanaugh. “It has been a huge reason for our overall success.”
Channel Innovation and Industry Influence
Under Kavanaugh’s leadership, WWT has become instrumental in shaping how technology vendors work with solution providers. The company’s relationships with executive leaders at companies including Cisco, Dell, HPE and Nvidia have helped define channel programs across the industry. Bob Olwig, WWT’s executive vice president of global partner alliances, noted that the company now coaches emerging tech companies on channel strategy: “We certainly contribute our ideas in shaping the channel programs that, not only the largest companies have like Dell, Cisco, NetApp, Pure, HPE, but I feel like we really do a good service to the industry by coaching and mentoring many emerging tech companies.”
Philanthropic Commitment and Community Impact
Beyond business success, Kavanaugh has demonstrated deep commitment to community service and philanthropy. He served as chairman of the board for St. Patrick Center, the largest homeless services agency in St. Louis, and leads WWT’s Global Community Impact Program. The company provides each employee with a paid “Day of Caring” to volunteer for causes they value. This community-focused approach stands in contrast to situations where business registration and compliance issues can challenge community development.

Mentoring Beyond Business: Soccer and Youth Development
Kavanaugh has extended his leadership philosophy to youth sports, chairing the elite St. Louis Scott Gallagher Soccer Club for the past 15 years. “We took a lot of the management and leadership things that we built in World Wide and brought it to the club in regard to how to train and manage the coaches, the directors, the VPs around behavioral issues, development issues, values of the club — those things are very transferable,” Kavanaugh explained. The club has produced hundreds of professional players, including U.S. national team members Tim Ream and Josh Sargent.
Sustaining Excellence Through Values-Driven Leadership
Kavanaugh’s people-first approach extends to maintaining strict standards for cultural alignment, even when it means parting ways with top performers who don’t embrace WWT’s values. “Individuals at World Wide may be really, really good from a performance standpoint, but we are very disciplined about, ‘We’re either going to coach you up so your values get in line with ours, or we’re going to coach you out,’” Kavanaugh stated. This commitment to cultural integrity has been fundamental to WWT’s sustained success, much like how successful turnarounds require fundamental value alignment throughout organizations.
Recognition and Accolades Reflecting WWT’s Market Position
WWT’s performance under Kavanaugh’s leadership is evidenced by numerous 2025 awards, including HPE’s Solution Provider and AI Solution Provider of the Year, Dell Technologies’ North America AI Partner of the Year and Federal AI Partner of the Year, and various Partner of the Year awards from Cisco, Nvidia, Google Cloud, and others. The company ranks No. 9 on the 2025 CRN Solution Provider 500 and No. 3 on Fortune’s “Best Workplaces In Technology” list.
The Legacy of a Channel Visionary
Reflecting on his career and the Lifetime Achievement Award, Kavanaugh emphasized that his greatest pride comes from how WWT has treated employees and built relationships. “There are so many things I’m proud of regarding the growth and success of the company and the value we bring — but more importantly is how we have treated our employees and built relationships with our customers and partners,” Kavanaugh told CRN. His legacy demonstrates that sustainable business success stems from combining strategic vision with genuine care for people, creating an organization that excels both commercially and culturally.
