Business Leader Considered for Top UN Refugee Role
The Swedish government has nominated outgoing IKEA CEO Jesper Brodin as its candidate for United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, according to reports confirmed last week. The selection marks a potentially historic shift in UN leadership patterns, with private sector executives rarely crossing over to lead major multilateral institutions.

Sources indicate that Brodin’s nomination represents an exceptionally rare career trajectory among global CEOs. While some business leaders like Donald Trump and Silvio Berlusconi have transitioned to national politics, virtually none have moved directly from corporate leadership to heading a major United Nations agency, analysts suggest.
Surprise Nomination for Global Executive
“I was surprised to receive the nomination. It was not something I had planned,” Brodin told Fortune in a Zoom interview after the announcement. The report states that Brodin believes his experience leading IKEA in more than 40 countries could bring valuable leadership to the UN system.
The Swedish foreign ministry explicitly endorsed Brodin’s business background in its nomination statement, suggesting that “the U.N. system would be strengthened by a person with business experience, especially given the major challenges now facing the U.N.”, according to expert analysis
Alignment with Humanitarian Mission
Despite the unconventional nature of the nomination, sources indicate the choice aligns with Brodin’s stated mission at IKEA, which focused on “creating a better everyday life for the many people.” Under his leadership, IKEA has participated in several UN and UNHCR projects globally, including skills training programs that have reportedly reached over 3,700 refugees., according to expert analysis
According to reports, IKEA’s retail arm has provided direct job opportunities to refugees from conflict zones including Syria and more recently Ukraine. This existing engagement with refugee issues may provide relevant experience for the UNHCR role, which the organization describes as protecting people forced to flee, delivering emergency aid, and helping displaced people find permanent homes.
Business Approach to UN Challenges
Analysts suggest that Brodin’s potential appointment comes at a critical time for the United Nations, which reportedly faces significant financial pressures and operational challenges. The UN is currently experiencing a cash crunch exacerbated by previous funding cuts from the Trump administration.
Brodin’s track record of economizing costs and resources at IKEA could prove valuable in addressing these financial constraints, according to observers familiar with both organizations. His business background might bring what some analysts describe as a “rational business approach” to the UN’s current crisis management needs.
Selection Process and Precedents
The UN secretary general will select the next High Commissioner for Refugees and send the nominee to member states for confirmation by year’s end. While UN leadership positions have traditionally been filled by career diplomats and politicians, there are some partial precedents for private sector experience.
Alexander De Croo, the designated new head of the United Nations Development Programme, began his career at Boston Consulting Group before entering Belgian politics and eventually becoming prime minister. However, Brodin’s potential direct transition from corporate CEO to UN agency head would represent a more dramatic departure from established patterns.
Brodin is scheduled to step down as IKEA CEO in November, potentially clearing the way for his transition to international humanitarian leadership if selected for the UNHCR position.
